Surbiton High School is a private independent school in Surbiton in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, England. It was founded in 1884 by a group of Anglican clergymen who instituted the Church Schools Company.〔(Departmental Technology : Surbiton High School )〕 Its objective was "to establish superior education for girls in accordance with the principles of the Church of England" wherever the need was felt. It is the founding member school of the Church Schools Company, now United Learning http://unitedlearning.org.uk/.〔(United Church Schools Trust :: United Learning Trust )〕 It has seven sites in Surbiton: the Junior Boys School, the Junior Girls School, Main School, Assembly Rooms, Bennett House, Charles Burney House and the Sixth Form Centre, as well as a sports grounds at Hinchley Wood and Oaken Lane. Surbiton High School takes female students from 4 years old to 18 years old, while the Boys' Preparatory School caters for 4 to 11 year olds. The current principal of Surbiton High School is Ann Haydon, a position she took up in January 2008. Previously, Ann was Deputy Headmistress at Guildford High School, Surbiton’s sister school in United Learning. Ann is committed to bringing out the ‘best in everyone’ and values links with the commercial sector as Surbiton prepares the pupils with the skills, knowledge and enterprising attitude that they need to prepare them for work in the global market. Ann believes that pupils should have the freedom to grow and learn at their own pace whilst being given excellent opportunities to realise their ambitions. They are encouraged to be independent thinkers who love to learn and whose learning is enriched by varied educational and exciting trips and visits to museums, art galleries, theatre performances and exhibitions, as well as residential trips abroad to countries as far as Iceland and Mongolia. Surbiton High School remains at the forefront of learning technology with interactive whiteboards in every classroom and superb facilities for the teaching of ICT. The Sixth Form Centre has enhanced the post-16 provision helping to ensure that the girls secure places at their first choice university. In 2005 completion of a major redevelopment of the main school site took place to provide additional purpose built classrooms, Science and Modern Languages laboratories and an open plan Art Studio. The extensive sports grounds at Hinchley Wood and Oaken Lane include a pavilion, all weather tennis and netball courts and two all-weather hockey pitches and a Multi-Use Games Area.
